ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT TENSION
The multi-ribbed belt used to drive the alternator on the Excel provides long durability with minimum loss of tension. However, properly adjusting multi-ribbed belt tension is critical because excessively high tension can damage alternator and water pump bearings. Checking belt tension during PDI and after installing air conditioning is always necessary.

Tension Check Procedure

Use a Borroughs Belt Tension Gauge (No. BT-33-73F) or equivalent.

Check the tension half way between the alternator and water pump, using care to attach the belt tension gauge properly.
Tension Specification

During PDI 80 +/- 5 lbs.

After installing air conditioning 80 +/- 5 lbs.

New belt installations
Initial adjustment 120 +/- 10 lbs.
After 5 minutes of operation 80 +/- 5 lbs.

Note: When installing a new belt, set initial adjustment then run engine for 5 minutes. Check belt tension and, if necessary, readjust to 80 +/- 5 lbs.
