Subject
TRUNK LID COUNTERBALANCING (FIELD FIX)
Vehicles produced prior to June 3, 1986 may not have adequate torsion bar strength to keep the trunk lid in the full upright position. This condition is correctable by installing a pair of torsion bar spacers which are available from the HMA parts department. These spacers, which are installed under the fixed end of the torsion bar (see illustration below), must be installed using the following instructions to avoid possible injury to the vehicle and/or the installer. We strongly advise the use of eye protection as these parts are under tension.
Installation Procedure
Step 1
Clamp a pair of self locking pliers on to the back edge of the body portion of the trunk hinge. This locks the torsion bar in place and prevents it from dislodging and flying out. This step must be performed for each torsion bar.
Step 2
Using a large prybar or screwdriver, pry the fixed end of the torsion bar out of the hinge piece and slip the spacer into position. Make sure that the spacer is properly positioned over the weld nut on the hinge and that the torsion bar is located in the notch provided for it. This step must be performed for each torsion bar.
Step 3
Prior to releasing the self locking pliers, visually inspect the installation of the spacer to confirm that it is properly located and that the torsion bar is secured by the locating notches in both the spacer and hinge assembly.
