A/C SERVICE HINTS
I. Evacuation
Evacuation of the A/C system is necessary any time it has been opened for repair, or has lost its charge.
- It is extremely important that the vacuum pump used is capable of pulling the system down to 28-29 in.Hg. Each 1,000 feet of elevation reduces this specification by about 1 in.Hg. (Example: At an elevation 5,000 feet, the system should pull down to about 23-24 in.Hg.)
- Required evacuation time is a minimum 20-25 minutes to insure elimination of air and moisture. No shortcuts are acceptable here.
II. Charging
It is imperative that the A/C system be charged with the correct amount of refrigerant (R-12).
The specified amount of R-12 is 1.7 lbs. (27 oz.) - 2.0 lbs. (32 oz.)
DO NOT OVERCHARGE
A one pound can of R-12 usually contains about fourteen (14) ounces. Therefore, two (2) cans should be enough.
III. Leak Testing
Refrigerant leaks are the most common causes of A/C problems and account for a large portion of all A/C repairs. Be sure to lubricate all O-ring fittings with frigerant oil and insure correct tightening torque always using two wrenches to tighten.
Whenever a service operation on an A/C system is performed, a leak test must be performed.
It is recommended that an electronic type detector be used.
