ANTENNA TESTING PROCEDURE
Some complaints of poor audio reception (fade, static, etc.) may be the result of a faulty antenna assembly or antenna extension cable. However, prior to replacing any of these components, test the operation of the antenna system using the following procedures.
ANTENNA/CABLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Center Conductor Inspection
Using a Volt OHM Meter (VOM), check for continuity between the antenna mast and the center pin of the antenna cable. Continuity must be present. If there is no continuity, the antenna should be replaced.
Ground Conductor Inspection
Using a VOM, check for continuity between the antenna ground wire and the outer conductor of the antenna cable. Continuity must be present. If there is no continuity, the antenna should be replaced.
Shorted Cable Inspection
Using a VOM, check for continuity between the antenna cable center pin and the outer conductor. Continuity must NOT be present. If there is continuity, the antenna should be replaced.
ANTENNA EXTENSION LEAD INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Center Conductor Inspection
(Sonata) There is a small capacitor installed in series inside the extension cable, (Sonata only), making it impractical to perform a continuity inspection of the center conductor.
(Excel) There is no capacitor installed inside the extension cable on the Excel. Check for continuity using an VOM meter between the male center pin and the female center pin as shown. Continuity must be present.
Ground Conductor Inspection
Using a VOM, check for continuity between the outer conductors of both ends of the extension cable. Continuity must be present. If there is no continuity the extension cable should be replaced.
EXTENSION CABLE SHORT INSPECTION
Using a VOM check for continuity between the extension cable center pin and outer conductor. Continuity must not be present. If there is continuity, the extension cable should be replaced.
POWER ANTENNA MOTOR OPERATION INSPECTION (Sonata only)
Connect a ground lead to pin 1 and a 12 volt power source to pin 2 of the M41 (antenna motor) connector. The antenna mast should remain in or go to the stowed position.
To operate the motor, alternately connect and disconnect a second 12v lead to pin 3 of the M41 connector. When the second 12v lead is connected to pin 3, the mast will extend. The mast will retract when the second lead is disconnected from pin 3.
Antenna Lubrication
The mast portion of the antenna does NOT require supplemental lubrication. If lubrication is added, dirt and grime will collect on the mast. This dirt and grime may inhibit the motorized operation of power antennas. If you are working with an antenna that has accumulated dirt and grime, we recommend that dirty antenna masts be thoroughly cleaned with a mild solvent or alcohol.
