REAR BRAKE DRUM/HUB INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

It is important to follow the proper procedure for installing the rear brake drum/hub onto the spindle to prevent wheel bearing damage.
Installation Procedure

1. Install the rear brake drum/hub, outer bearing, washer, and hub retaining nut. (Run the nut on finger tight.)

2. Rotate the drum/hub by hand and tighten the hub nut to 15 ft.lbs. with a torque wrench.

Note

It is necessary to rotate the drum/hub as shown in Figure 1 while tightening the hub nut to properly seat the outer rear wheel bearing.

Improper seating of the bearing may cause bearing stress and damage to the outer race and rollers. This could result in noise and premature bearing wear.

3. Loosen the hub nut to 0 ft.lbs.

4. Retorque the hub nut to 4 ft.lbs. with a torque wrench while rotating the drum/hub.
Note

Premature bearing wear and noise can occur if the hub nut is not tightened to the specified 4 ft.lbs.

5. Install the nut retainer and a new split pin. If the hole in the spindle and the nut retainer cannot be aligned, you may loosen the nut slightly (a maximum of 15~) to allow the split pin to be installed.

6. During removal of the hub cap it may be deformed and, therefore, not fit properly if reinstalled onto the drum. To avoid this condition, install a new hub cap.
