Starting/Charging System - Diagnosis Procedures

STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEM SERVICE INFORMATION











When diagnosing starting and charging system conditions, please use the following procedures.

STARTING SYSTEM

a. Does not crank and no click sound is heard at starter solenoid:
- Battery dead/poor chassis ground
- Battery terminal connections.
- Starter motor "S" terminal connection.
- Ignition lock switch (with M/T)
- Starter Relay
- Inhibitor switch (with A/T)

b. Starter solenoid clicks, but engine does not crank:
- Battery condition (check indicator)
- Loose battery posts
- Spark condition
- High tension cable
- Ignition wiring connections
- Noise filter

c. Engine cranks slowly:
- Battery condition
- Battery posts and
- Spark plugs

Noise filter check
a. Unplug the noise filter connector.
b. Try to start the engine
c. If the engine starts with the noise filter unplugged, but will not with it connected, the noise filter should be replaced.
