Drip Rail - Center Section Replacement Procedure
89hyundai04Subject: DRIP RAIL CENTER SECTION REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
Group: BODY
Number: 001
Date: APRIL, 1989
Model: EXCEL
The drip rail used on the 1986 through 1989 model year Excels is made of multiple sections. The 4 and 5 door models use 3 sections and the 3 door model uses 2 sections.
The procedure described in this bulletin is for replacement of the center section using a structural adhesive rather than spot welding or brazing. This procedure should only be used when damage to the center section drip rail is limited to the weatherstrip retaining portion (see illustration).
If the front or rear sections of the drip rail require replacement it is suggested that the individual spot welds of those components be drilled out and that the replacement parts be welded into place using a wire type welder.
Precautionary Note:
This procedure requires a substantial amount of grinding. Therefore, it is very important that the interior and all exterior painted surfaces be protected prior to starting. It is suggested that all areas be masked off using a heavy craft paper.
Service Procedure
1. Remove and discard the existing weatherstrip.
2. Grind off the weatherstrip retaining portion of the existing drip rail to form a horizontal flange. Sand or grind the edge of the newly formed flange so that it is straight and smooth.
3. On 4 and 5 door models it is necessary to prepare the replacement part prior to installation by cutting off the center flange that faces upward.
4. Apply two beads of a high quality structural adhesive such as 3M's 08101 to the modified drip rail of the vehicle.
5. Carefully position the replacement part and clamp into place while the adhesive cures.
NOTE:
Be sure to carefully follow the structural adhesive manufacturers instructions for mixing and curing their products.
6. Tape the end joints of the center section drip rail to the front and rear drip rail sections. Use a cloth backed adhesive tape that is 112" to 5/8" wide.
7. Apply a suitable body and seam sealer, such as 3M's 08505 to the exposed edges of the drip rail and wipe off excess to form a smooth rounded joint.
8. Prime and repaint the area.
9. After the paint has dried install a new style weatherstrip, Part Number Information
