FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING
Hyundai Motor America has developed a fuel injector cleaning system that will help restore dirty fuel injectors. Use the following tools and procedures to properly service Hyundai fuel injection systems.
WARNING:
FLAMMABLE MATERIALS UTILIZED!
- Use extreme caution!
- Do not expose to sparks or an open flame or allow fluid to come in contact with hot engine parts!
- Do not allow cleaning fluid to come in contact with paint or plastic!
- Always wear eye protection while cleaning!
1. With the engine running, at normal operating temperature, disconnect the fuel pump connector located near the center of the fuel tank (On Elantra the connector is accessible by removing the rear seat). This will depressurize the fuel rail, allowing the engine to stall.
2. Disconnect the fuel return line from the pressure regulator and cap the regulator outlet with the return line plug provided (P/N J39780-3).
3. V6 Sonata
- Disconnect the inlet fuel line at the fuel rail. Install the 3.0L adapter (P/N J39780-1).
2.4 Sonata
- Disconnect the inlet fuel line at the fuel rail. Install the 12 mm cleaning adapter hose (P/N J39780-2) directly to the fuel rail using the the factory eye bolt and (2) copper washers.
All other Hyundai vehicles
- Remove the 12 mm eye bolt from the top of the fuel filter.
- Remove the fuel line eye bolt and copper washers.
- Install a copper washer on the 12 mm x 40 mm eye bolt supplied with the kit.
- Install the 12 mm cleaning adapter hose (P/N J39780-2) onto the 12 mm x 40 mm bolt supplied with the kit.
- Install a copper washer next.
- Install the fuel line eye fitting.
- Install a copper washer.
- Install the acom nut supplied with the kit and tighten to 18 to 20 ft.lbs.
4. Connect the fuel injector cleaner tool hose (p/n J39780-4 or J39781-1) to the cleaning adapter hose and tighten securely.
5. Close ball valve on cleaning tool (Valve is closed when handle is 90~ to hose).
6. With ball valve closed, screw aerosol can onto the cleaning tool and hang the can high on the inside of the hood.
7. Open the ball valve 90~ and start the car. For engines up to and including 2 liters, hold the idle speed at 2000 RPM, and for engines over 2 liters, hold the idle at 1500 RPM. Run the engine until the aerosol can is empty and the engine stalls. (Engine must run for at least 5 minutes for the injector cleaner to work properly). When the engine stalls, him off the ignition.
8. Close the ball valve and remove the aerosol can. The system may still contain some residual pressure. To bleed it off place a shop towel over the fitting for the aerosol can and slowly open the ball valve.
9. During reassembly, follow shop manual installation and torque specifications.
V6 Sonata
- Remove adapter from fuel rail and reinstall fuel pressure line.
- Remove the return line plug from fuel pressure regulator and reinstall fuel return line.
- Reconnect the fuel pump connector at the fuel tank.
2.4L Sonata
- Remove the 12 mm cleaning adapter hose from fuel rail and reinstall fuel pressure line making sure the (2) copper washers are in their correct places.
- Remove the return line plug from fuel pressure regulator and reinstall fuel return line.
- Reconnect the fuel pump connector at the fuel tank.
All Other Hyundai vehicles
- Remove vehicle fuel hose from the 12 mm cleaning adapter hose.
- Reinstall vehicle fuel hose to the fuel filter making sure the (2) copper washers are in their correct places.
- Remove the return line plug from fuel pressure regulator and reinstall fuel return line.
- Reconnect the fuel pump connector at the fuel tank (fuel pump connector on Elantra is under the rear seat).
10. Immediately start the engine and run it at 2000 RPM for 5 minutes, then rev the engine several times to exhaust any dislodged carbon.
CAUTION:
CHECK THE FUEL LINE AND CONNECTIONS FOR LEAKS IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING ENGINE.
11. Add the Fuel Injector System Cleaner to the fuel tank (make sure there is at least 2 gallons of fuel in the tank).
