REAR BRAKE/PARKING BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT
When servicing the rear brakes or adjusting the parking brake, it is very important to remember that each system may affect the operation of the other. For example, improper adjustment of the parking brake cables may cause the automatic rear brake adjuster to malfunction. Conversely if the rear brake shoes are not correctly adjusted during installation, as specified in the Shop Manual, the parking brake may not function properly.

The following adjustment procedure should be followed anytime the rear brake shoes or parking brake cables are adjusted:

Adjustment Procedure (Must be done to both rear brakes)

1. Release the parking brake lever.

2. Raise vehicle and remove rear brake drums.

3. Inspect the outside diameter of the rear brake shoes using a large caliper.

Shoe outside diameter, A=7.0/7.1 in.

NOTE: Do not use a ruler or tape measure as accurate measurements are not possible. A caliper capable of bridging the spindle is required.

4. Adjust the rear brake outside diameter if necessary. Depress the automatic adjuster lever and turn the star wheel until the proper outside diameter is attained.

5. Reinstall brake drums following the procedure in the Shop Manual.

6. Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle.

7. Check the adjustment of the parking brake. Using an accurate pull gauge, count the number of clicks it takes to reach a resistance of 44 lbs. 5-7 clicks is required.

8. Adjust the parking brake cables to attain the proper number of clicks.

NOTE: It is critical that the parking brake lever be properly adjusted as insufficient freeplay may cause the automatic adjuster to malfunction. Excess freeplay may cause the parking brake to not operate properly.

9. Adjust the rear brake shoe clearance by alternately pulling and releasing the parking brake lever, and then depressing and releasing the brake pedal.

NOTE: It may be necessary to readjust the parking brake cables after this step. Make sure the 5-7 click range is maintained, and adjust the cables again if necessary.
