1988-1989 EXCEL HEATER STEM ASSEMBLY
SERVICE CAMPAIGN (21)
Certain 1988 and 1989 Excel heater control valves may experience coolant leakage from the valve stem assembly. Replacement of the stem assembly is necessary to correct this condition. Instructions for replacement of the heater stem assembly are as follows.
1. To improve access to the heater hoses inside the engine compartment, first loosen the emission charcoal canister clamp. Then carefully raise the canister upward and lock the clamp. Do not remove the canister from the bracket.
2. Pinch off the heater hoses inside the engine compartment with a locking clamp pliers. Be careful not to cut or damage the hoses.
3. Protect the interior carpet with plastic sheeting and place a container under the heater valve to catch any coolant leakage when the heater stem is removed.
4. Remove the two screws holding the cover which shields the stem.
5. Remove the white lever that is attached to the stem by removing its pivot screw.
6. Remove the four screws attaching the heater valve stem and then remove the stem assembly itself.
7. Insert the new stem into the housing, using engine coolant to lubricate the 0-ring. Re-install the four attachment screws, white lever, and the cover with its two screws. Remove the clamping pliers from the heater hoses, and check the hoses for cracks or damage from the clamping. Reposition the charcoal canister to its original position in the bracket and lock the clamp.
8. Check the coolant level (fill as necessary) and start the engine.
9. Check for coolant leaks.
10. Remove the coolant catch container and plastic sheeting from the interior.
11. Mark the VIN plate by placing a punch mark above the seventh digit.
Close the hood and the campaign procedure is now complete.
