LOW & REVERSE BRAKE END PLAY ADJUSTMENT KM171-5 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The KM171-5 automatic transmission used in Excels manufactured after 9-8-88 require a new procedure for measuring the low & reverse brake end play. This procedure is NOT shown in the 1989 Excel Shop Manual SEAS8-80612.

NOTE: WHENEVER SERVICING HYUNDAI AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GENERAL GUIDELINES.

^ Gaskets, O-rings, and seals must never be reused. Always use new ones when servicing the assembly.

^ Use only Petrolatum or Vaseline to hold parts in place during assembly, do not use grease.

^ All frictional, and moving parts should be soaked in ATF for at least 2 hours before assembling.

^ Use only lint free towels during assembly.

End Play Measuring Procedure

The following procedure should be performed after step 33 and before step 34 of the automatic transmission reassembly procedure described on page 45-60 of the 1989 Excel Shop Manual SEAS8-80612.

1. Install Special Service Tool (SST) 09453-21400 in one of the bolt holes for the output flange bearing retainer.

2. Attach a dial indicator to the SST as shown. Make an extension for the dial indicator out of steel or brass rod that is no larger than 3 mm in diameter. (See Step 3)

3. The dial indicator extension rod must go through the transfer idler shaft hole and contact the brake reaction plate.

4. Apply air pressure (approximately 10 psi) to the low/reverse pressure port (located under the valve body) and measure the end play on the dial indicator.

End Play Standard Value = 0.036"
(0.93 mm)
Maximum End Play = 0.043"
(1.09 mm)
Minimum End Play = 0.030"
(0.78 mm)
Pressure Plate Selection

If the measured end play is not within the minimum/maximum range, a new pressure plate will need to be installed. To calculate which pressure plate should be used you will need the following factors.

^ Original pressure plate thickness (see stamped number on pressure plate and chart on next page).

^ Measured end play.

^ Amount out of specification (standard value vs measured end play).

To determine which new pressure plate to select make the following calculations:

A. Too Much End Play (end play exceeds .043 in. (1.09 mm))

Step A1) To determine how far the assembly exceeds the specification, subtract
the standard end play value from the measured end play value. (measured value minus standard value (0.036") equals "amount out of specification")

Step A2) To determine the thickness of the new pressure plate, ADD the "amount
out of specification" (which you found in step A1 above) to the original pressure plate thickness (from chart below).

Step A3) Select the pressure plate that most closely matches the dimensions
found in step A2. If the thickest pressure plate does not adequately reduce the end play then it is necessary to overhaul the Low/Reverse brake by installing new frictional and drive plates.

B. Too Little End Play (end play less than .030 in. (.78 mm))

Step B1) To determine how far the assembly is under specification, subtract
the measured end play value from the standard end play value. Standard value (.036) minus measured value equals "amount out of specification".

Step B2) To determine the thickness of the new pressure plate, subtract the
"amount out of specification" (which you found in step B1 above) from the original pressure plate thickness (from chart below).

Step B3) Select the pressure plate that most closely matches the dimensions
found in step B2.
