Subject
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE OIL COOLER FLUSHING (Eastern Region Pilot Program Only)

Whenever an automatic transaxle is replaced in a vehicle, the oil cooler and lines must be flushed to remove contaminants that may be present. Improper or lack of flushing may result in severe damage to the replacement transaxle.

The Transmission Cooler Flusher (J39463) must be used whenever a transaxle is replaced as part of the Remanufactured Automatic Transmission (ATM) Program. Refer to the instructions below.

OIL COOLER AND LINE FLUSHING

1. Check the flushing tool and hoses for wear or cracks before using. Replace if needed.

2. Remove the filler cap from the flusher tank. Use the measuring cup provided and fill the flusher tank with 21 oz. of J35944-20 (available from Kent-Moore) biodegradable flushing fluid. Follow the handling procedure on the fluid container.

3. Securely tighten the filler cap and pressurize the tank with shop air between 80-120 p.s.i. The air line should be equipped with a water trap to ensure a dry air supply.

4. Refer to figure 1. Hang the tool under the hood.

5. Attach the discharge hose of the tank to the return hose of the transaxle oil cooler using a hose clamp.

6. Refer to figure 2. Connect the drain hose of the flusher to the feed hose of the transaxle oil cooler using a hose clamp.

7. Securely clamp the open end of the drain hose to a waste container to catch the flushing fluid.

Warning:
Do not pour the waste fluid into a sink or floor drain. This fluid must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. (Check local regulations)

8. With the water and air valves turned off, attach the water and air supply to the flusher (use hot water if available).

9. Refer to figure 3. Turn on the flusher water valve so that water will flow through the oil cooler for 10 seconds. If the water does not flow through the oil cooler it is completely plugged and will need to be replaced.

10. Refer to figure 4. Depress the trigger on the flusher to mix flushing fluid into the water flow. Use the wire clip to hold the trigger down.

11. While flushing with the water and flushing fluid for 2 minutes, turn the air valve on for 5 seconds every 15-20 seconds, to create a surging action. (Air pressure max. 120 p.s.i.)

12. Turn the water valve off, release the trigger, and reverse the hoses to the cooler to flush the opposite direction. Repeat steps 8 through 10.

13. Release the trigger and allow water only to rinse the cooler for one minute.

14. Turn the water valve off and turn off the water supply.

15. Turn the air valve on to dry the system for two minutes or until no moisture is visible leaving the drain hose.

Important:
Residual moisture in the oil cooler or pipes can damage the transaxle.

16. Remove the flusher from the cooler line. Attach the drain hose to an oil container.

17. Remove the remanufactured transaxle from the reusable shipping box and install in the customer's vehicle and leave the drain hose attached to the cooler line.

18. Fill the transaxle to the proper level using the specified automatic transaxle fluid. With the transaxle in park, run the engine for 30 seconds or until approximately 1 quart/litre of A.T.F. is discharged.

19. Remove the drain hose and reconnect the cooler return hose to the transaxle. Refill the transaxle with specified A.T.F. to the proper level. Do not overfill. Check for external leaks and road test to verify the operation of the vehicle.
