DISC BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATORS

The front disc brakes of all 1989 Hyundai models are equipped with an audible brake pad wear indicator, a metal clip mounted to the inner brake pad. When the pad material wears to a point where the clip contacts the brake disc, a squealing noise will occur to indicate that the pads need replacement.
Brake Noise Information

In some cases during light or moderate brake applications, a high pitched squeal may occur even when the brake system functions properly and sufficient brake pad material remains. This noise can occur because brake systems and pad material must be designed to operate properly under a wide range of driving conditions, meet government performance requirements, and match customer expectations for wear resistance. Noise level is one of the factors considered in the design of brakes and is affected by the material selected to meet the other objectives.

Customer concerns about normal brake noise can sometimes be alleviated by a careful explanation of this condition if no function or wear problems are evident.
