ELANTRA PASSIVE SEAT BELT SYSTEM

SYSTEM LAYOUT

The Elantra front passive seat belt system consists of a lap belt and shoulder belt, each with its own retractor mounted in the front door. A passive seat belt control unit is mounted in the left "B" pillar and controls the operation of the the driver and passenger side independently.

SYSTEM OPERATION

When a front door is opened, the passive seat belt control unit receives the "door open" signal from the door latch switch and activates solenoids mounted in the seat belt retractors to disengage the retractor locks. This prevents the seat belt retractors from inadvertently locking while you are opening the door. When the door is closed, the solenoids deactivate after approximately 1 second allowing normal operation of the retractors.

WARNING CHIME OPERATION

If the control unit senses any component malfunction, it will activate a warning chime located within the passive restraint control unit. The warning chime is activated when the following three conditions are met:

- Ignition switch is ON
- Solenoid signal is OFF(door is closed)
- Retractor actuator switch is closed (indicates that solenoid plunger is pulled in and the retractor lock is deactivated)

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the seat belt locks while the door is being opened quickly, check the following for conditions that might prevent the solenoids from being activated and releasing the retractor locks:

- Battery disconnected or drained
- Missing or blown fuse # 19
- Door latch switch/wiring operation
- Retractor solenoid/wiring operation
- Passive seat belt controller/wiring operation

If the warning chime is activated when the ignition switch is on, check the following:

- Retractor solenoid/wiring operation
- Passive seat belt controller/wiring operation
