Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

CAUTION: Improperly adjusted throttle valve opening will increase exhaust gas temperature at deceleration, reducing catalyst life greatly and deteriorating exhaust gas cleaning performance. It also affects fuel consumption and engine braking.

NOTE: Adjustment of idle speed is usually not required. If idle speed is out of specification check and verify the operation of the idle speed control system. Refer to COMPUTERS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS.

1. Precondition the vehicle as follows:
a. Engine coolant temperature greater than 176 degrees F.
b. Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories off.
c. Transaxle in neutral or park.
d. Steering wheel in the neutral position.
e. Ignition timing verified correct.
f. Loosen accelerator cable.

IGNITION TIMING

1. Loosen the accelerator cable.

Hyundai Multi-use Tester:

2. DO NOT HAVE THE MULTI-USE TESTER CONNECTED WHILE CHECKING TIMING.
Basic ignition timing is to be set using a timing light. Do not have the MUT connected or use the MUT reading. If the MUT is connected it will cause an incorrect basic ignition timing reading.

Diagnostic Connector Hookup:

3. Connect a tachometer.

Connecting Jumper To Terminal:

4. Ground the terminal of the ignition timing adjusting connector.
5. Start and run the engine at curb idle speed.

Standard value
Curb idle speed....750 ± 100 rpm

Ignition Timing Mark:

NOTE: When checking ignition timing with an advance-type timing light, the adjusting knob must be set at zero. If the advance function is used, timing readings will be twice that of the actual timing value.

6. Check base ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

Standard value
Base Timing....5° ± 2°BTDC

IDLE SPEED

7. Run the engine at 2,000 to 3,000 rpm for 5 to 10 seconds.
8. Allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes.
9. Verify Idle Speed.

Curb Idle Speed
750 +/- 50 rpm.

Idle Speed Adjusting Screw:

10. If idle speed is not as specified, adjust the idle speed control adjusting screw.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR

TPS Output Test Hook-up:

11. Connect a digital type voltmeter between terminals 3 (-) and 4 (+) of the throttle position sensor.
Do not disconnect the TPS connector from the throttle body.

12. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start the engine) and check that the TPS output voltage is within specifications.

Standard value
TPS Output 0.48-0.52V

Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment:

13. If the output is not within specification, loosen both the TPS mounting bolts and adjust by turning the TPS. Tighten the bolts after adjustment.

Torque:
TPS Installation Bolt 1.8 - 3.2 ft.lb (2.5 - 4.4 Nm.)

14. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
15. Start the engine and check to be sure that the idle speed is correct.

Standard value
Curb Idle 750 ± 100rpm

16. Turn OFF the ignition switch and disconnect the battery terminal for 15 seconds or more and then reconnect. (This erases the data stored in ECU memory during the TPS adjustment).
