REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE OF OUTSIDE MIRROR BASE PLATE
DESCRIPTION
If the paint on the outside mirror base plate peels, the base plate should be replaced to ensure proper paint adhesion. This service bulletin outlines the replacement procedure for the outside mirror base plate.
The procedure applies to Excel, Scoupe and Elantra vehicles. Sonata mirror disassembly instructions are included for reference, should the mirror housing need to be separated for painting.
SERVICE PARTS INFORMATION
CAUTIONS IN SERVICING THE OUTSIDE MIRROR
^ Work on a soft cloth to prevent scratching or damaging the outside mirror.
Be careful not to scratch the paint on the outside mirror housing or the base plate when performing the replacement procedures.
^ Use only manual tools for the disassembly and reassembly.
^ When removing the last of the 4 or 5 screws securing the mounting bracket, care should be taken to ensure that the bracket is held. This will prevent it from springing back and injuring the hand.
^ Clean the mirror surface after reassembly has been completed.
^ This procedure must be properly followed to prevent mirror vibration, noise, or water leaks.

NOTE:
If any additional OP codes are required for removal of the door panels, refer to the Labor Time Standard Manual
EXCEL MANUAL MIRROR BASE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Remove the door panel top edge to access the mirror mounting screws. Remove the mirror assembly from the door.
2. Remove the retainer screw from inside the mirror by inserting the screwdriver into the middle hole of the plastic housing.
3. Remove the mirror by carefully pulling up on the mirror.
4. Remove the small spring from the mirror and base.
Note how the spring is mounted.
5. Remove the 4 screws from the mirror mounting base. Press on the backing plate while removing the screws to prevent it from snapping inward.
6. With needle nose pliers, remove the 2 springs from the metal bracket and then remove the metal bracket. Remove the housing from the mirror base.
7. Remove the foam and rubber pad from the mirror base. The pad is glued to the base plate, so pull up carefully to break the glued area instead of tearing the rubber.
8. Remove the 2 screws holding the adjusting lever to the base plate. Remove the cover and carefully pull the plastic ball socket over the adjusting ball. Slide the lever through the base plate to remove it.
9. Unhook the springs from the link arms on the base plate. Remove the mirror base assembly and install the new one.
10. Reassemble in the reverse order.
ELANTRA MANUAL MIRROR CONTROL BASE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
1. Remove the mirror from the vehicle.
2. Remove the mirror glass from the mirror housing by carefully pulling up one corner of the glass and then another until it pops out. Do not pull the mirror glass completely out of the housing, as the paddle will not release.
3. Remove the foam and rubber pad from the base plate. The pad is glued to the base plate, so pull up carefully to break the glued area instead of tearing the rubber.
4. Remove the 2 screws holding in the adjuster. Pull out the adjuster and remove the cover and the socket behind the adjuster (it is split, lift one side of the split over the adjuster ball, then pull the rest over).
5. Pull on the adjuster until the paddle releases the mirror and the mirror can be folded out. Unclip the spring from the paddle, and slide the mirror off the paddle. (Note how the spring attaches to the mirror and to the paddle.)
6. Remove the 4 screws in the actuator which hold it onto the backing plate. Remove the actuator.
7. Pull the adjuster handle and paddle assembly out of the base plate housing.
8. Remove the 5 screws from the backing plate. Pull it up to loosen the springs (it will not loosen much).
9. Use flat pliers (slip joint type) to force the spring off of the backing plate.
10. Pull the mirror housing away from the base plate. Remove the 4 screws holding the hinge to the base plate. Remove the housing from the base plate.
11. Unhook the springs from the link arms on the base plates.
12. Reassemble in the reverse order.
NOTES:
The backing plate is very difficult to attach with the springs. Push it as far into the housing as possible, Then attach the springs. Stand the backing plate up and work it's legs down into place, then insert and tighten the 5 mounting screws. Glue the edges of the rubber pad onto the base plate.
ELANTRA AND KOREAN (ULSAN) BUILT SONATA'S POWER MIRROR BASE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
1. Remove the mirror from the vehicle (the door panel may need to be loosened along the top edge to access the electric connector).
2. Unsnap the mirror holder/mirror assembly from the housing by pulling the outside edge of the mirror holder/mirror assembly out of the housing.
3. Remove the 4 mounting screws and allow the actuator to hang down. Note the actuator mounting position (where the wires come out).
4. Remove the 3 backing plate to housing screws and the 2 backing plate to mounting ann screws.
5. Pry the ends of the springs off of the backing plate.
6. Remove the foam and rubber pad from the base plate to expose the hole the actuator wire runs through. The pad is glued to the base plate, so pull up carefully to break the glued area instead of tearing the rubber.
7. Pull the housing away from the base, expanding the hinge. Note the location of the wire tie. Cut the wire tie, and pull the actuator wire through the base plate.
8. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the hinge to the base plate. Release the hinge and housing from the base plate.
9. Reassemble in the reverse order.
NOTES:
Fit the rubber and foam blocks in position last. Fill around the actuator wire in the base plate with RTV or window sealant. Be sure to replace the wire tie in the correct position. Push the backing plate as far as possible into the mirror before attaching the springs, then fold outward to get the backing plate legs onto the mounting arms.
SCOUPE MANUAL MIRROR CONTROL BASE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Remove the door panel to access the mirror mounting screws. Remove mirror.
2. Remove the mirror glass from the mirror housing by carefully pulling up on the corners of the mirror glass.
3. Remove the rubber pad from the mirror base plate. This is glued to the base plate, so pull up carefully to break the glued area instead of tearing the rubber.
4. Remove the 3 screws securing the manual control lever to the mirror base.
5. Remove the 4 screws securing the actuator to the backing plate. Note the position of the bracket for reinstallation purposes.
6. Note which color cable goes through which hole in the backing plate (yellow, red or black).
7. Turn the actuator upside down. Note how each cable housing enters on the outside edge of an almost oval hole. Pull up on the housing and move it over to the inner edge. This should release the end of the cable from the actuator. Repeat for the other 2 cables. Remove the actuator, and pull the cables and the lever assembly out of the base plate.
8. Remove the 4 screws holding the backing plate to the housing (to prevent the backing plate from snapping inward, press on the backing plate while removing the screws).
9. Lift the backing plate up and remove the springs using needle nose pliers. Remove the housing.
10. Unhook the springs from the links on the base plate.
11. Reassemble in reverse order except: Attach the springs to the backing plate, then run the adjustment cables through the base housing and the appropriate holes in the backing plate, then screw down the backing plate.
