Evaporative Emissions System: Description and Operation

PURPOSE/OPERATION
The evaporative canister is used to contain fuel vapors (hydrocarbons) that would otherwise vent to the atmosphere. The vapors are transferred from the fuel tank to the evaporative canister through tubing. The evaporative canister stores these vapors until the engine is running, warmed up and off idle. At this point the purge control solenoid valve opens and allows the fuel vapor to be drawn into the intake manifold and burned in the combustion chamber.
