Idle Speed: Testing and Inspection

IDLE SPEED CHECK PROCEDURE

Checking Conditions
1. Engine coolant temperature is 80 to 95°C (176 to 203°F).
2. Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories are off.
3. Transaxle in neutral ("P" or "N" range for automatic transaxle vehicles).
4. Steering wheel in a straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering).

Checking Procedure
1. Install the tachometer and timing light.

2. Ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal.
3. Run the engine and let it idle.
4. Check the basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

Basic Ignition Timing: 5° ± 2° (at idle)

5. Remove the wire from the ignition timing adjustment terminal.
6. Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes.
7. Check the idle speed.

Curb Idle: 750 ± 100 RPM

NOTE: Adjustment of idle speed is usually unnecessary because this system controls the idle speed.

BASIC IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT
NOTE: Before adjusting check that the spark plugs, injectors, idle speed control motor, compression, etc. are normal. Clean the throttle body area.

Adjustment Conditions
1. Engine coolant temperature is 80 to 95°C (176 to 203°F).
2. Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories are off.
3. Transaxle in neutral ("P" or "N" range for Automatic Transaxle vehicles).
4. Steering wheel in a straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering.

Adjustment Procedure
1. Loosen the accelerator cable.
2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector in the fuse box.
3. If the scan tool is not used connect a tachometer and ground the data link connector.
4. Ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal.
5. Run the engine for more than 5 seconds at an engine speed of 2,000 to 3,000 RPM.
6. Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes.
7. Check that the engine RPM is within the standard value. If the scan tool is used, press Code 22 and read the engine RPM.

Basic Idle Speed: 750 ± 100 RPM

Idle Speed Adjusting Screw:

8. If the basic idle speed is out of specification, adjust the speed adjusting screw for the standard RPM. Use a tachometer to adjust.

NOTE: If the idle speed is higher than specified, even with the speed adjusting screw fully closed, check whether the idle switch (fixed speed adjusting screw) moving mark exists or not. If it is found that the switch has moved adjust the idle switch to it's proper position.

9. Turn off the ignition switch and remove the ground from the ignition timing adjusting terminal and data link connector or disconnect the scan tool.
10. Remove the tachometer.
11. Disconnect the negative battery terminal (-) for 15 seconds or more.
12. Adjust the tension to the acceleration cable.
13. Restart the engine and keep it idling for 10 minutes or more.
14. Check that the engine is idling normally.
