DOHC ENGINE TIMING CHAIN NOISE REPAIR
DESCRIPTION:
Some 1996-98 Elantra, 1997-98 Tiburon and 1997 DOHC Accent vehicles may experience excessive timing chain noise. This condition may be caused by the timing chain striking the upper chain guide. If you encounter a vehicle with this condition, please follow the repair procedure.
Please refer to TSB # 96-20-002 for detailed instructions for Elantra/Tiburon timing belt and chain replacement and TSB # 97-20-010-1 for the DOHC Accent.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Remove (and discard) the timing chain upper guide. (See figures 1, 3 and 4).
2. Replace the timing chain. (See figures 2, 6 and 7)
Note:
The new timing chain has BLUE timing links (the previous chain has GOLD links). (See figures 6 and 7).
WORK TIPS:
1. The bolts which hold the timing chain upper guide in place can be reused.
2. Be sure to correctly align the timing chain to the cam sprockets (see figures 6 and 7).
3. Be sure to torque the cam shaft bearing caps to 10 lb.ft (14 N.m).
4. Be sure to torque the valve cover to 7 lb.ft (10 N.m).
