THIS SUPERSEDES TSB # 96-40-008 ONLY FOR THE 1996 ELANTRA MODEL.

DESCRIPTION:

A new Transaxle Control Module (TCM) is available as a field fix for the 1996 Elantra to improve the following conditions:





1. Shift shock when shifting from Reverse (R) to Drive (D) while rolling backwards at 1-3 miles-per-hour.

2. Shift shock during coasting downshifts (closed throttle) as transmission automatically changes from 3rd to 2nd gear or from 2nd to 1st gear.

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

1. Record the customer's radio stations and disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Locate the Transaxle Control Module (TCM) under the dashboard near the brake pedal.





3. Using a 10 mm socket, remove two (2) nuts that hold the black plastic control module box to the TCM. Let the control module dangle on the harness.

4. Using a 12 mm socket, remove three (3) 12 mm bolts which attach the TCM bracket to the toe board. Remove the bracket and TCM.

5. Disconnect the harness from the TCM.

6. Using a 10 mm socket, remove the remaining two (2) nuts that hold the TCM to the bracket. Separate the TCM from the bracket.

7. Install the new TCM on the bracket using only the bottom two (2) nuts.

8. Connect the wire harness to the TCM.

9. Reinstall the TCM and bracket to the toe board with the three (3) bolts using the 12 mm socket.

10. Reconnect the black plastic control module box to the TCM using the 10 mm socket.

11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

12. Drive vehicle to confirm proper operation of the transmission.

13. Reset the customer's radio stations and clock.
