Subject
BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE (SHOP MANUAL CORRECTION)

DESCRIPTION:

The brake booster check valve illustration and corresponding vacuum check valve test shown in the 1996-1997 Elantra Shop Manual and 1997 Tiburon Shop Manual are incorrect. The information given in the manuals reflect 1995 and earlier Elantra models.

The correct illustration and vacuum check valve test procedure for the brake booster check valve are shown.

Please note the corrections and write the TSB number at the bottom of the page in the appropriate Shop Manual for future reference.

ANALYSIS:

Two types of brake booster check valves are used on Elantra vehicles. The difference between these two valves is their location in the brake booster system. Both types maintain a limited vacuum reserve in the brake booster. The 1995 and earlier model Elantra vehicles incorporate the vacuum check valve between the two vacuum hoses as shown in the appropriate Shop Manuals. The 1996 and 1997 Elantra vehicles and the 1997 Tiburon vehicles incorporate the brake vacuum check valve inside the vacuum hose assembly, leading from the intake manifold vacuum connector to the brake booster vacuum inlet tube.

VACUUM CHECK VALVE TEST PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose from the vehicle.

2. Using an external vacuum pump, apply vacuum to the booster side of the vacuum hose. If vacuum is held, the check valve is good. Proceed to step 4.

3. If there is no vacuum held, the check valve is leaking and the vacuum hose assembly must be replaced.

Caution:
Do not attempt to clean the vacuum hose or check valve.

4. Again, using the external vacuum pump, apply vacuum to the intake manifold side of the vacuum hose. No vacuum should be held. If there is vacuum, the vacuum line of the check valve is plugged and the vacuum hose assembly must be replaced.
