(ALR) SEAT BELT OPERATION
-REISSUE-
The information in this bulletin is being reissued to you (re: TSB 80-00210/31/97) as a reminder of proper Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) seat belt operation. Prior to replacing an anticipated defective seat belt, please ensure that you and the vehicle's owner both fully understand the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) seat belt's function and operation.
Two types of 3-point seat belt operating modes are used on Hyundai vehicles:
1. ELR - Emergency Locking Retractor operating mode.
2. ALR - Automatic Locking Retractor operating mode.
The ELR operating mode allows the seat belt to be extended while fastened to the buckle. This allows freedom of forward movement and will only lock during an emergency situation. All 3-point seat belts allow this operation. Please note, however, quickly extending the seat belt may simulate an emergency stop in the retractor's mechanisms and lock into position. This indicates that the seat belt is operating as designed and is not to be considered defective.
The ALR operating mode is a combination of the ELR mode and a child restraint locking system that can only be found on all rear 3-point seat belts and the front passenger 3-point seat belt. With the ALR mode activated, the seat belt CANNOT be extended forward. It is locked tight preventing any freedom of forward movement, thus making it ideal when fastening a child seat. When the ALR mode is not activated, the ELR mode resumes allowing the seat belt to be extended at any time
To activate the Automatic Locking Retractor for use with a child seat, simply extend the seat belt to its fullest length. Secure the child seat, and fasten the buckle. As the seat belt retracts, it will fit snugly around the child seat and cannot be extended. To remove the child seat with the ALR mode activated, simply press the release button on the buckle as you would normally do and allow the seat belt to fully retract.
The ALR mode is automatically deactivated once the seat belt fully retracts. When reinstalling a child seat, the seat belt must once again be fully extended to activate the ALR mode.
Note:
If the ALR is activated when being used by a passenger, they may complain of overtightness or restriction.
A full description of the ALR and ELR seat belt operating modes can also be found in each vehicles Owner's Manual.
