Oxygen Sensor - Voltage/Diagnosis Explanation

Group: ENGINE ELECTRICAL

Number: 96-36-002

Date: MAY, 1996

Model: 1996 ELANTRA, 1996 ACCENT

Subject:
O2 SENSOR VOLTAGE RANGE WITH "MOTRONIC" EFI SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION:

Beginning with the 1996 model year, Accent and Elantra models are equipped with a Motronic EFI system. On Motronic EFI systems, the front and rear O2 sensors normal operating range is 0.7 to 1.6 volts. O2 sensors on previous models and current Sonata models operate between 0.1 to 0.9 volts. This bulletin explains how this affects diagnostic procedures.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES:

When using the Hyundai Diagnostic System (HDS), the technician will notice that the top of the O2 sensor pattern appears to be cut off (clipped). This is due to the voltage scale used on the HDS and NOT due to any
malfunction in the O2 sensor circuit.

The HDS can be reconfigured to the correct voltage scale by performing the procedures as shown.
