Subject
TAPPING NOISE AT THE PASSENGER SIDE ENGINE COMPARTMENT/DASH PANEL
DESCRIPTION:
A "tapping" noise may be heard at the passenger side dash panel/engine compartment area when the engine is running. It may be accompanied by a vibration in the floor and steering wheel. This condition is more noticeable with the air conditioning "ON".
Note:
This condition may be misdiagnosed as an "Engine Noise".
ANALYSIS:
The "tapping" is caused by the grommet plate or grommet plate screw coming into contact with the evaporator lines. The grommet plate and screw are located in the engine compartment on the dash panel.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Identify the contact location (flange head screw or grommet plate) and proceed with step A or B.
A. If a screw contacts the evaporator line, replace the existing flange head screw with a similar screw that has a smaller flange head.
B. If the grommet plate contacts the evaporator line, then reshaping of the grommet plate is required.
1. Mark the location of contact on the plate with a marker.
2. Using an approved recovery machine, recover the refrigerant from the A/C system.
3. Disconnect the A/C lines from the evaporator and move them out of the way.
4. Remove the plate and grind away enough material to provide a .035" (0.90 mm) clearance from the evaporator lines.
5. Reassemble, evacuate and charge the system as described in the appropriate Shop Manual.
