Subject
DOHC VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR
DESCRIPTION:
Beginning with the 1996 model year, all Elantras and Accent GT models are equipped with a new style DOHC engine (Alpha & Beta). If cylinder head repair is required on one of these engine types, the Valve Spring Compressor, SST # 09222-29100 will be a necessary tool. This bulletin describes how to use the tool.
SERVICE PROCEDURES:
Remove camshaft bearing caps and camshafts from cylinder head.
Using 4 M6 x 1.0-15 mm bolts, attach support brackets to cylinder head at outboard bearing cap mounting locations.
NOTE:
Removal of bearing cap guide sleeves is not necessary.
Slide spring compressor support rods through holes in support brackets.
Cut 4 pieces of 1/2" I.D. hose approximately 2" long, and slide over ends of support rods. This will keep support rods from sliding out of support brackets.
Insert spring compressor under support rods and turn T-handle until valve spring is sufficiently compressed to remove valve retainers (keepers).
CAUTION:
When compressing spring, be careful not to scratch/damage lifter bore in cylinder head.
