TAILGATE LIFTER REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

DESCRIPTION:

Elantra station wagons are equipped with a lifter assisted tailgate. This bulletin describes how to remove and install the tailgate lifters.

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

REMOVAL:

1. Place a prop between the center of the tailgate and the floor of the cargo area as shown in the photograph below. The prop must be sturdy and able to support the full weight of the tailgate at the full open position.

CAUTION:
To prevent damage or personal injury DO NOT remove both tailgate lifters simultaneously.

2. Remove the upper and lower lifter assembly brackets from the tailgate and body on only one side of the vehicle.

Note:
New brackets must be used when the lifter is replaced, (see parts table below).

INSTALLATION:

3. Install the new top and bottom brackets to the tailgate and body.

4. Snap lifter to ball-ends of upper and lower lifter assembly brackets. Make certain that exposed rod portion of lifter is attached to the body bracket, not the tailgate bracket. The black cylinder attaches to the tailgate bracket.

Note:
The lifter must be compressed approximately 1/2" to line up with the brackets.

If it is necessary to replace both lifters, repeat steps 2 through 4 for the opposite side.
