Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

OPERATION

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CAS) consists of a sensor mounted near the crank timing belt pulley reading a three tooth tone wheel. A voltage is supplied to the sensor which creates a magnetic field around it. As the crankshaft rotates, the tone wheel interrupts the magnetic field. The resulting signal produces the square wave seen in HDS. Using the Throttle Position Sensor, Crankshaft Position Sensor, and other inputs, the ECM determines ignition timing and fuel injection.
