SHIFT QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS FOR 2.0L & 3.0L SONATAS

THIS TSB HAS BEEN REVISED TO INCLUDE THE 2.0L SONATA, UPDATE THE EFFECTIVE PRODUCTION DATE AND ADD 2 POSSIBLE CONDITIONS IN THE DESCRIPTION SECTION.

DESCRIPTION:

A new Transaxle Control Module (TCM) is available for the 1995-1996 Sonata 2.0L & 3.0L to improve the following conditions:

1. Shift shock after shifting from P-D or N-D, then accelerating.

2. Shift shock when shifting from P-D while rolling backwards at 1-3 mph.

3. Shift shock which occurs at approximately 5-10 mph when decelerating, usually when the engine is cold.

4. Harsh 3-2 downshift during moderate acceleration at approximately 15-30 mph.

If a customer experiences any of the above conditions, install the new TCM.

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

1. Using a small screwdriver, carefully pry up the front edge of the cover plate surrounding the shift tower. Carefully raise the front edge of the plate to release locating tabs at rear.

2. Using a small screwdriver, carefully pry up the upper cover of the front console, remove the electrical connection, then remove cover.

3. Remove the self tapping screw at the bottom of the center facia panel.

4. Extend the cup holder. By grasping it firmly on both sides and using a quick rearward motion, you can separate the panel from the dash.

5. Disconnect the electrical connections at the top and bottom of the center facia panel and move the panel to expose the TCM.

6. Using a 12 mm socket, remove the lower bolt that holds the TCM bracket to the floor of the vehicle.

7. Using an 8 mm socket, remove the two nuts that hold the TCM bracket to the body of the TCM.

8. Using an 8 mm socket, remove the two remaining nuts that hold the TCM to the rear mounting bracket.

9. With a downward/rearward motion, carefully remove the TCM from its rear mounting bracket.

10. Depress the two locking tabs on the electrical connectors and remove the TCM.

11. Install the new TCM in reverse order.

Installation tip: Assemble the cover plate to the upper cover (removed in steps 1 & 2) prior to reinstalling to the front console.
