Group: CLIMATE CONTROL

Number: 97-97-003

Date: OCTOBER, 1997

Model: 1996-1997 ELANTRA

Subject
1996-97 ELANTRA AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER CHANGE

DESCRIPTION:
Beginning with May 1, 1997 production, a new type air conditioning condenser revised includes an integral liquid tube. The new condenser requires special installation instructions to prevent damage to liquid tube "A".

If a condenser needs replacement, and the receiver-drier is reusable, follow the instructions for installation:

1. Remove the retaining nuts from liquid tube "A" and liquid tube "B" from the top of the receiver-drier.

2. Loosen the receiver-drier bracket adjustment bolt to loosen the receiver-drier.

3. Push the receiver-drier down to separate it from the liquid tubes. This will provide easier access to reinstall it (as noted in Step 7).

4. Loosen and remove the two receiver-drier bracket attaching nuts and remove the bracket from the old condenser.

5. Assemble the receiver-drier bracket attaching nuts to the new condenser. Keep the receiver-drier pushed down as far as possible.

6. Lubricate the O-rings on the liquid tube with new R134-compatible PAG-III oil.

7. Lift up on the receiver-drier and locate the liquid tube pipe flange onto the receiver drier.

8. Install the flange nut onto liquid tube "A" and tighten (torque to 4 lb-ft, 5.4 Nm).

9. Install liquid tube "B" and tighten each end (torque to 4 lb-ft, 5.4 Nm).

10. Tighten the receiver-drier bracket adjustment bolt to mount the receiver-drier (torque to 10 lb-ft, 13.5 Nm).

11. Install the condenser/receiver-drier subassembly into the vehicle.
