Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Adjustment Conditions:- Engine coolant temperature: 85-95° C (185-203° F)
- All accessories: OFF
- Transmission: N (Neutral)
- Parking brake: ON
Adjustment Procedures
1. Connect a timing light and tachometer.
2. Start the engine and check the curb idle speed.
Curb idle speed .......................... 700 ± 100 rpm
NOTE: Do not use the scan tools. If tested with the scan tool connected to the data link connector, the ignition timing will not be the basic timing but ordinary timing.
3. With the engine stopped, connect a lead wire alligator clips to the terminal for ignition-timing adjustment (located in the engine compartment), and ground it.
4. Start and run the engine at idle speed.
5. Check the basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary.
Basic ignition timing ............................. 5° ± 2° BTDC
6. If the timing is incorrect, loosen the distributor mounting nut, and rotate the distributor until the timing is correct.
IMPORTANT : The ignition timing will be retarded if the distributor is turned to the left, and advanced if it is turned to the right.
7. After adjustment, securely tighten the mounting nut.
CAUTION: When tightening the nut, make sure the distributor does not move.
8. Stop the engine.
9. Disconnect the lead wire connected at step 3.
10. Start and run the engine at curb idle speed.
11. Ensure the idling ignition timing is correct.
Actual ignition timing ............................ 15° BTDC
