Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the main console.





2. Remove the cable adjuster, pin, equalizer and nut holder.





3. Detach the parking brake switch.
4. Remove the parking brake lever.
5. Remove the rear seat cushion and take up the carpet.
6. Remove the parking brake cable clamp and grommet.
7. Remove the tire assembly and the brake drum.
8. Remove the rear hub assembly.
9. Remove the springs and shoe hold down pins.





10. Remove the cable clip.
11. Disconnect the cable end from the trailing shoe.
12. Drive out the parking brake cable to the under body side.

INSPECTION
1. Check the parking brake switch operation.
2. Check the parking brake lever ratchet for wear.
3. Check the parking brake cable or operation or damage.

REASSEMBLY





1. Check the parking brake cables for an identification marks and install as appropriate on the left and right sides.





2. Set the adjuster lever all the way back when installing the shoe-to-shoe spring.





3. Install the grommets in the direction shown in the illustration.





4. Apply a coating of the specified grease to each sliding parts of the ratchet plate or the ratchet pawl.

Specified grease: Multipurpose grease SAE J310, NLGI No. 2

5. After installing the cable adjuster, adjust the parking brake lever stroke.
