Date: SEPTEMBER, 1999
Model: 1999 ELANTRA
Subject
1999 ELANTRA EXHAUST DRONE/BUZZING AT IDLE & LOW SPEEDS
DESCRIPTION:
The exhaust system in the 1999 Elantra has been changed from previous model years to accommodate the use of a 2.0L engine. On vehicles with Federal Specification emission systems, on some vehicles a low pitched "droning" or "buzzing" noise may occur at idle or at engine speeds up to 2500 RPM. The sound is similar to that made when blowing across the top of an empty bottle. In some vehicles, a slight vibration may also be felt in the passenger side floor or the front seat cushions.
SERVICE INFORMATION:
New exhaust hanger (P/N 28658-29090) replaces the previous hanger for the center exhaust pipe to eliminate the droning/buzzing. The updated part is a direct replacement for the previous hanger in the center pipe location only (see photo below). The other 3 hangers for the exhaust system remain the same.
Vehicles produced after July 1,1999 are equipped with the new exhaust hanger. For commonality, the new exhaust hanger is installed on both Federal Specification and California Specification vehicles.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
If a vehicle experiences the above described condition, replace the center exhaust hanger as shown with the new P/N (28658-29090).
