TIMING BELT JUMPING ON 2.4 L SIRIUS-II ENGINES

Some 2.4 L Sonata EFs, manufactured through January 31, 2001, may experience a rough idle, or appear to have an engine misfire at idle, with no Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in the ECM, or MIL illuminated.

If you encounter a 2.4 L Sonata EF with this condition and no fault can be found after routine diagnosis, then we recommend that you check to see if the timing belt has jumped a couple teeth off the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

If this has occurred, reset the valve timing using the procedure described in the Shop Manual, and install a new Timing Belt Upper Cover, which employs a guide to prevent the timing belt from jumping
