Subject
2000 ELANTRA AND 2000 TIBURON SECURITY SYSTEM NO CRANK CONDITION
DESCRIPTION:
A security system malfunction may occur in some 2000 MY Elantras and Tiburons that are equipped with that option. Two symptoms may occur with these vehicles:
Symptom 1: A non-functioning security system, but the vehicle operates normally.
Symptom 2: The security system is non-functional and the vehicle will not crank or start.
ANALYSIS:
The alarm Central Processing Unit (CPU) may "lock-up" during an arming or disarming cycle. If it is locked up, it can be reset by momentarily disconnecting the power source. If a 2OOOMY Elantra or Tiburon experiences either of these symptoms, reset the CPU by following the procedure below:
PROCEDURE:
1. Record the customer's pre-set radio stations.
2. Remove the pink "ignition power source" fusible link marked 30 AMP - IGN from the Engine Compartment Fuse Box momentarily and re-insert. The Fuse Box is located in the driver's side engine compartment, in front of the shock tower.
The temporary procedure above allows the vehicle to crank and function normally; however, the affected vehicle will need to be repaired by replacing the security system control module and the relay pack.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Locate and remove the security control module from under the dash and to the left of the steering column. This module is typically attached to an existing wire harness under the dash next to the vehicle's computer.
2. Locate and remove the two relays found on the relay assembly near the security control module. These relays may also be found at the top of the driver's kick panel on some vehicles.
3. The individual relay sockets should currently be inter-locked to form the relay assembly. Release the individual sockets and allow them to hang freely next to each other.
4. Plug the new revised security control module into the security harness. DO NOT mount the module at this time.
5. Plug the new relay pack into the relay sockets.
NOTE:
The new relays are attached to each other and will not lit onto the relay assembly unless the two individual sockets are detached from each other
6. Verify the security system functions as intended.
7. Mount the security system module in its original location. Complete the installation by mounting the relay assembly into its original location.
8. Verify that all wiring is secure and that no components rattle or hang down
PARTS INFORMATION
NOTE 1:
Both the security system control module and the relay pack are required for the repair procedure.
NOTE 2:
Current Elantra and Tiburon Security Kits contain updated module and relay pack.
