Control Arm: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the wheel.





2. Remove the under cover.
3. Disconnect the brake hose from the knuckle.





4. Using the special tool, disconnect the lower arm ball joint from the knuckle.

NOTE: Loosen the nut but do not remove it. Be sure to tie a cord to the special tool to a nearby part.





5. Remove the stabilizer link mounting self-locking nut, and detach the stabilizer bar from the lower arm.





6. Remove the lower arm mounting nut and bolt.

INSPECTION
1. Check the bushing for wear and deterioration.
2. Check the lower arm for bending or breakage.
3. Check the clamp for deterioration or damage.
4. Check the ball joint dust cover for cracks.
5. Check all bolts.





6. Check the ball joint for starting torque.
1. If a crack is noted in the dust cover, replace it and add grease.
2. Shake the ball joint stud several times.
3. Mount two nuts on the ball joint, then measure the ball joint rotating torque.
Ball joint rotating torque: 2 - 10 Nm (20 - 100 kg.cm, 17.7 - 88.5 inch lbs.)
4. If the rotating torque exceeds the upper limit of standard value, replace the tie rod end.
5. Even if the rotating torque is below the lower limit of the standard value, the ball joint may be reused unless it has drag and excessive play.

BALL JOINT AND DUST COVER REPLACEMENT





1. Using a screwdriver, remove the dust cover from the lower arm ball joint.
2. Remove the snap ring.





3. Using the special tools, remove the ball joint from the lower arm assembly.





4. Press fit the ball joint into the lower arm assembly.
5. Pack the specified grease or equivalent in the new dust cover.
6. Press fit the dust cover to the ball joint with special tool.

LOWER ARM BUSHING (A) REPLACEMENT





1. Install the Special Tools (09545-34000, 09545-28100) on the lower arm.
2. Press out the bushing.





3. Apply soap solution to following portions.
1. Outer surface of the new bushing.
2. Inner surface of the lower arm bushing mount.
3. Inner surface of the Special Tools.





4. Install the new bushing onto the lower arm as shown in the illustration.





5. Press fit the bushing into the lower arm bushing mount.
6. Center the bushing by the following procedure, if necessary.
1. Reset the Special Tools and lower arm.
2. Center the bushing.

NOTE: After centering the bushing, wipe off the soap solution.

INSTALLATION





1. Install the lower arm mounting bolt and nut.
Lower arm bush A mounting bolt: 100 - 120 Nm (1000 - 1200 kg.cm, 72 - 87 ft. lbs.)
Lower arm rod bush mounting bolt: 80 - 100 Nm (800 - 1000 kg.cm, 58 - 72 ft. lbs.)
Lower arm rod bush mounting nut: 35 - 45 Nm (350 - 450 kg.cm, 25 - 33 ft. lbs.)





2. Tighten the stabilizer link mounting self-locking nut.
3. Install the lower arm ball joint to the knuckle.
