2001 ELANTRA XD IDLE SPEED
- HIGH IDLE AND/OR DELAYED RPM DROP -
(FIELD FIX)
This bulletin is issued to inform you of an Engine Control Module (ECM) reprogramming procedure and possible TPS replacement (see "Diagnosis/Repair" section) for all 2001 MY 2.0 litre Elantra XD vehicles (as specified below) that may experience the following conditions:
Engine idle speed is higher than specification (at normal engine operating temperature).
While the manual transaxle is between gear shifts, the engine speed decreases too slowly (manual transaxle equipped vehicles only).
If you encounter a 2001 MY Elantra XD (as specified below) that has either, or both, of these symptoms, follow the procedure in the "Diagnosis/Repair" section, below, before proceeding to the "ECM Reprogramming" procedure.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 2001 MY 20 L Elantra XD vehicles. 2001 MY Elantras can be identified with the number "1" in the 10th position" of the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.)
DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR
1. Check, and adjust if necessary, the throttle and cruise control cable adjustments.
2. With the engine at normal operating temperature and all accessories OFF, examine the TPS value (in degrees) with the Hi-Scan Pro in the CURRENT DATA menu option using the Sol-Pro software card, while performing the following steps:
a. With the transaxle in Park or Neutral and the parking brake engaged, slowly depress the throttle cam on the throttle body (by hand), just a few degrees, and slowly release the throttle. Then, quickly depress the throttle, just a few degrees, and release quickly. Repeat this procedure several times and check the TPS value on the Hi-Scan Pro after each throttle manipulation.
b. If the TPS value does not vary from 0.0 - 0.5 degrees at idle, then the TPS is operating properly. Proceed to Step 3.
C. If the TPS value varies from 0.0 - 1.4 degrees (or more) when the throttle is released the TPS value is incorrect (the idle speed may be higher than specification when the TPS value is 1.4 degrees or higher).
d. To repair replace the TPS and recheck.
3. Proceed to the next section "ECM REPROGRAMMING".
ECM REPROGRAMMING
Reprogramming Cautions
1. Do not start the engine during the procedure.
2. Do not switch the ignition key OFF during the procedure.
3. Do not disconnect any wiring connectors during the procedure.
4. Do not switch the Hi-Scan Pro OFF during the procedure.
5. After reprogramming is complete disconnect the Hi-Scan Pro from the vehicle wait at least 20 seconds with the ignition key in the OFF position then start the engine and let it run for one minute.
6. Remove the reprogramming software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and re-install the diagnostic software card. Connect the Data Link Connector cable to the Data Link Connector and check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Erase if any appear.
Hi-Scan Pro Setup
1. Be sure that the Data Link Connector (DLC) cable is installed to your Hi-Scan Pro.
2. Remove both the software card and the troubleshooting card if installed from your Hi-Scan Pro.
3. Insert the reprogramming software card into the upper slot of your Hi-Scan Pro.
(This is the same reprogramming software card that you should have recently updated with the 2002 MY Hi-Scan Pro Software Update CD-ROM that was recently sent to you.)
4. Connect the Data Link Connector cable to the vehicle's Data Link Connector (DLC).
ECM Specifications
Automatic Update Procedure
1. Once the HI-Scan Pro has been set up and connected to the vehicle as described on the previous page, turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
3. Press "ENTER" at the first screen.
4. Select option "O9. ELANTRA 2001 MY ISA ADAPTION" and press "ENTER."
5. Select option "01. ELANTRA 2001 MY [AUTO MODE]" and press "ENTER."
6. Enter the password 0801 and press "ENTER."
7. From this point, the Hi-Scan Pro is checking and automatically reprogramming the ECM.
8. When the "COMPLETED" message appears, the reprogramming was successful. To complete the new reprogramming and be sure it is retained in the ECM's memory, turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF and disconnect, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position for 20 seconds, then start the engine and let it run for one minute.
Manual Update Procedure
In the event menu option 01. ELANTRA 2001 MY [AUTO MODE] fails to download the new ECM program option 02. ELANTRA 2001 MY [ERROR MODE] must be used.
1. Set-up the Hi-Scan Pro as described under Hi-Scan Pro Setup, then turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
3. Press "ENTER" at the first screen.
Note:
Do Not select option "01. ELANTRA 2001 MY (California)". The programming in this option will not comply with Canadian regulations and may adversely affect the exhaust output emissions.
7. Enter the password 2302 and press "ENTER".
Note:
This password is for Federal Spec. only and will not work if you mistakenly selected the California Spec option.
8. From this point the Hi-Scan Pro is checking and automatically reprogramming the ECM.
9. When the "COMPLETED" message appears the reprogramming was successful. To complete the new reprogramming and be sure it is retained in the ECM's memory turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF and disconnect turn the ignition switch to the OFF position for 20 seconds, then start the engine and let it idle for one minute.
