Subject
CABIN AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT - ELANTRA AND TIBURON

DESCRIPTION:

This bulletin describes the steps necessary to add or replace the cabin air filter for the Elantra and Tiburon. The cabin air filter is a replaceable paper element filter that removes particulates such as dust from the air. The cabin air filter for these vehicles is located in a slot above the blower motor. It is accessed by lowering the glove box (see the installation/replacement procedure below).

TSB 03-97-003, Cabin Air Filter Application Chart, provides part numbers, factory installed applications and vehicles in which a cabin air filter may be installed if they were not equipped with one during production. Information is provided for all Hyundai models. The air filter part number for the Elantra and Tiburon is P/N 97133-2D000. The typical service interval is 12,000 miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first. More frequent maintenance may be required in very dusty environments which may clog the filter. A major benefit (if installed) is that it reduces the possibility that mold and mildew may accumulate on the evaporator. Particulate debris becomes trapped in the replaceable filter and is removed from the system during routine maintenance. Unwanted odors may also be remedied by replacing the air filter.

NOTE
Installation/Replacement of the cabin air filter is considered a maintenance item and not covered under warranty.

ELANTRA - GLOVE BOX PREPARATION (STEPS 1-3, 7-9)
TIBURON - GLOVE BOX REMOVAL (SKIP TO STEPS 44-9)

1. (Elantra only) Open the glove box and remove the 2 rubber stop blocks from each side of the glove box.

First pull the stop block toward you (1).

Then pull the front edge in toward the inside of the glove box and pull it out to remove it (2).

2. (Elantra only) Remove the glove box damper by gently pulling the mounting pin out, then feed the mounting pin through the hole. Hold/support the glove box to prevent it from swinging wide open when the damper is removed. Lower the glove box.

3. (Elantra only) Remove the 2 screws that hold the metal bracket at the back of the glove box housing. Lower the bracket out of the way. Proceed to Step 7.

4. (Tiburon only) (skip to Step 7 for Elantra). Remove 3 mounting screws at the outside bottom of the glove box.

5. (Tiburon only) Remove 3 mounting screws at the inside top of the glove box.

6. (Tiburon only) Pull the glove box out (straight back and slightly down) to pull the glove box free from the retaining clips.

Disconnect the lamp connector at the right rear of the housing. Set the glove box out of the way.

7. Push up and simultaneously pull towards you the two (2) filter cover tabs. The lower edge will pop out, slide the cover down to separate the cover from the three upper retaining slots.

Tiburon Only: Move the lamp harness connector out of the way to the right side (not shown).

8. Pull out the old filter and/or slide in the new air filter P/N 97133-2D000 with the arrow facing in the direction of airflow (down in this case).

9. Reassemble as follows:

Reinstall the filter cover.

Reinstall the metal bracket (Elantra).

Reconnect the damper and rubber stops (Elantra).

Reconnect the glove box lamp connector (Tiburon).

Reinstall the glove box with the six mounting screws (Tiburon).
