Removal and Installation

FRONT DRIVESHAFT ASSEMBLY

COMPONENTS

REMOVAL

1. Remove the wheel and tire.
2. Drain the transaxle fluid.
3. Remove the split pin from the front hub.
4. With applying the brakes, remove the nut.
5. Disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle.

6. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle.

7. Using a plastic hammer, separate the driveshaft from the axle hub.
8. Push the axle hub toward the outside of the vehicle, and separate the driveshaft from the axle hub.

9. Insert a pry bar between the center bearing bracket and the driveshaft, and then pry the driveshaft from the transaxle. (In case of 2.7L engine)

NOTE: Do not put/ on the driveshaft itself; doing so will damage the D.O.J. or T.J.: be sure to use the pry bar.

10. Insert a pry bar between the transaxle case and the driveshaft, and pry the driveshaft from the transaxle (Except 2.7L ENG.)

NOTE: Do not insert the pry bar too deeply. It may cause damages on the oil seal.

CAUTION: Do not apply the vehicle weight to the wheel bearing while the driveshaft is disconnected. If the vehicle's weight must be applied (because of vehicle movement or some other reason), use the special tool(09517-21500) to hold the wheel bearing, as shown in the figure.

11. After releasing the auto tensioner, remove the drive belt. (2.7L ENG.)

12. Remove the alternator assembly (2.7L ENG.)
13. Remove the center bearing bracket mounting bolts. Insert the pry bar between the center bearing bracket and the cylinder block to disconnect the bracket from the cylinder block.

14. Remove the inner shaft from the transaxle.

15. Using the special tool(09432-11000), remove the tone wheel.

INSPECTION
1. Check the driveshaft boots for damage and deterioration.
2. Check the ball joints for wear and damage.
3. Check the splines for wear and damage.

4. Check the dynamic damper for cracks and wear.

INSTALLATION
1. Coat gear oil to the driveshaft splices and differential case sliding surface.
2. Before installing the driveshaft, set the opening side of circlip facing downward.
3. Whether or not the joint shaft is making contact with the pinion shaft can be known by the sound or feeling when driving it in.
4. After installation, check that there is 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) of play in the axle direction.
5. After installation, check that the driveshaft cannot be removed by hand.

6. Install the washer under the driveshaft nut with facing the convex side outward as shown in the illustration.
7. Tighten the following parts to the specified torque.
8. For adjusting drive belt and tensioner, See ADJUSTING DRIVE BELT AND TENSIONER.
9. After installation, check ABS sensor signal and front wheel alignment.
