Number:
04-40-012

Date:
AUGUST, 2004

Model:
2003-05 ELANTRA SULEV

Subject:
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE HARSH AND/OR DELAYED SHIFTS

DESCRIPTION:

NOTE:
This TSB is applicable for Elantra SULEV vehicles only. Refer to TSB 02-40-019 or TSB 02-40-020 for other vehicles.

If you are servicing an automatic transaxle with a harsh and/or delayed shift, check:

^ ATF level according to TSB 03-40-019. Add SPIII ATF if necessary.

^ Diagnostic Trouble Codes in both the "Engine" and "Automatic Transaxle" menus. If DTC are found, repair according to the appropriate TSB or shop manual. If no DTC are found, go to "Diagnostic Procedure".

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:

Attach the Hi-Scan Pro and select the following menus:

NOTE:
Ask an assistant to drive the vehicle as you monitor the Hi-Scan Pro.

"HYUNDAI VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS" "AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE" "FLIGHT RECORD", then select:

^ "VEHICLE SPEED", then F1 "FIX"

^ "SHIFT POSITION", then F1 "FIX" F6 "RCD", "ENTER"

Accelerate vehicle 1-2-3-4, then F6 "END" F1 "GRPH"

Confirm the PCM commanded each gear as shown:

^ If so, go to "HARSH OR DELAYED UPSHIFTS".

^ If not, check the wiring between the PCM and transaxle for a short or open circuit. If the wiring is OK, replace the PCM.

HARSH OR DELAYED UPSHIFTS:

Attach the Hi-Scan Pro and select the following menus:

1-2 UPSHIFT:

"HYUNDAI VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS" "AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE" "FLIGHT RECORD"

^ "2nd Solenoid Duty", then F1 "FIX"

^ "OD Solenoid Duty", then F1 "FIX" F6 "RCD" "ENTER" Accelerate vehicle 1-2, then F6 "END" F1 "GRPH"

Confirm the PCM adjusts the 2nd solenoid duty during the 1-2 upshift similar to graph (2nd solenoid duty must change from 0% to 100% within 1-2 seconds).

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, check the wiring between the PCM and transaxle for a short or open circuit. If the wiring is OK, replace the PCM (unified ECU and TCU).

2-3 UPSHIFT:

Repeat for the 2-3 upshift

Accelerate vehicle 2-3, then F6 "END"

Confirm the PCM adjusts the OD solenoid duty during the 2-3 upshift similar to graph (OD solenoid duty must change from 0% to 100% within 1-2 seconds).

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, check the wiring between the PCM and transaxle for an open or short circuit. If the wiring is OK, replace the PCM (unified ECU and TCU).

3-4 UPSHIFT:

Repeat for the 3-4 upshift. Accelerate the vehicle 3-4, then F6 "END"

Confirm the PCM adjusts the solenoid duty during the 3-4 upshift similar to the graphs:

NOTE:
The duty must change from 0% to 100% within 1-2 seconds. Both graphs show correct solenoid operation.

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, check the wiring between the PCM and transaxle for an open or short circuit. If the wiring is OK replace the PCM (Unified ECU and TCU).

DIAGNOSIS:

Toggle the left and right keys to measure the start and end of each shift, then subtract the two numbers. If any shift requires more than 2.0 seconds, swap a PCM from a properly operating vehicle:

^ If the condition is improved, replace the PCM (unified ECU and TCU).

^ If the condition is not improved:

^ Check the oil temperature sensor according to TSB 00-40-010.

^ Compare the vehicle with another vehicle of the same year and model. If the shift quality condition is more noticeable than other vehicles, replace the transaxle.
