DESCRIPTION:

Some 2003-2004 Sonata vehicles with 2.4L and 2.7L engines (see affected VINs and production dates below) may experience a mild, one-time driveline bump when accelerating from a stop after the vehicle has been parked for more than one hour.

The driveline bump will be felt as one, two or three successive bumps between 2-10 mph and will occur only once for each driving cycle. The driveline bump will not occur after the engine and transaxle are at normal operating temperature.

This bulletin provides the procedure to reprogram the Transaxle Control Module (TCM) software in 2003-2004 Sonata vehicles with 2.4L and 2.7L engines using the Hi-Scan Pro.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

^ Model: 2003-2004 SONATA 2.4L and 2.7L vehicles.

^ Affected vehicle production date range:

- 2.7L: Produced from Nov. 03, 2002

- 2.4L: Produced from Nov. 02, 2003

^ Affected VIN range:

- 2.7L Produced from KMHWF35H03A798938 (With TCS)

Produced from KMHWF35HX3A798901 (Without TCS)

- 2.4L: Produced from KMHWF25S14A982051





TCM SPECIFICATIONS:

TCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING

1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position

2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.

WARNING:
If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.

3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.

4. Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.

5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn OFF the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.

TCM REPROGRAMMING:

NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.





1. Remove any software cards from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert reprogramming card into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.

2. Connect the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro.

3. Connect the 10 pin connector to the reprogramming adapter.

NOTE:

10 pin connector color:

^ 2.4L : Red

^ 2.7L : White

4. Connect power to the Hi-Scan Pro from the cigarette power adapter.





5. Insert the power cable from the reprogramming adapter into the cigarette power adapter.

6. Connect the cigarette power adapter into the vehicle cigarette power socket.





7. Connect the 10 pin connector to the reprogramming connector at the crash pad lower next to the DLC connector.

NOTE:
10 pin connector color
- 2.4L: Red
- 2.7L: White

8. Turn the ignition to the ON position.





9. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.

Select option "62. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING
FEEL IMPROVEMENT" and press ENTER.





10. Select option "01. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL [AUTO]" and press ENTER.





11. Enter "1229" as the password for automatic update and press ENTER.





12. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication.





NOTE:
^ The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current TCM ID, assigns the new TCM ID and displays them on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

^ Check the TCM IDs displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct TCM software is being downloaded.

^ Refer to the "TCM SPECIFICATION TABLE" in this TSB.

^ If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section.

WARNING:
^ Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time.

^ The TCM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.





13. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED!" message is displayed, the TCM reprogramming process is finished.
Press ENTER and turn off the ignition for 20 seconds.

14. Start the engine to check for proper operation.

15. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card.
Erase all trouble codes.

MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE:

NOTE:

^ In the event that "01. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL [AUTO]" fails to download the new TCM program, option "02. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL [ERROR]" must be used.

^ Confirm all connections are established as shown in the "AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE" before continuing.

1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.

2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.





3. Select option "62. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL IMPROVEMENT" and press ENTER.





4. Select option "02. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL [ERROR]" and press ENTER.





5. Choose the vehicle type which is correct for your vehicle.








6. Select the correct password for the manual update mode which is correct for the vehicle specification by referring to the chart. And then press ENTER.

WARNING:
Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is selected, the correct program will not be downloaded.

7. Wait until the reprogramming is completed. Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the TCM.

WARNING:
^ Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time.

^ The TCM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download completely.





8. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the TCM.

NOTE:

^ The Hi-Scan Pro displays the new TCM ID on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

^ Check the new TCM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct TCM software is being downloaded. Refer to the "TCM SPECIFICATION TABLE" shown in this TSB.





9. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED!" message is displayed, the TCM reprogramming process is finished.
Press ENTER and turn off the ignition for 20 seconds.

10. Start the engine to check for proper operation.

11. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card.
Erase all trouble codes.

EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE:

1. "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the exact password again.

2. "REPROGRAMMING ERROR, PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry reprogramming automatically.

3. "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED " or " INCORRECT TARGET ID": This reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle or the ECM/TCM is not the type subject to this reprogramming procedure.

4. "REPROGRAM ERROR, PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM" : In this case, you must reprogram manually after selecting the menu option "02. EF 2.4/2.7 DRIVING FEEL [ERROR]".
