Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Prior to checking ignition timing ensure there are no leaks or kinks in any hoses, air cleaner is clear, and E.G.R. valve, throttle valve and throttle sensor are functioning properly and all electrical connections are secure.
Ensure all accessories are Off. Vehicles with automatic transmissions should be in neutral.

1. Start engine and run until warm, then run engine at 2,000 RPM for two minutes and accelerate engine a few times to 2,000 - 3,000 RPM, then allow to return idle.

2. If using the Consult system checking unit, select ``IGN TIMING ADJ'' in ``WORK SUPPORT,'' then touch ``START.''
If not using Consult system checking unit, stop engine, then disconnect throttle sensor harness connector.

3. Start engine, then accelerate a few times to 2,000 - 3,000 RPM and allow to idle.

4. Check timing using appropriate timing light.

Ignition timing, should be 12 - 17° BTDC at 750 RPM.

Adjust ignition timing by loosening distributor mounting bolt and turning distributor.

5. If necessary, adjust idle by turning idle speed adjusting screw to obtain correct idle speed.

6. If using the Consult system checking unit, touch ``Back.''
If not using Consult system checking unit, stop engine, then connect throttle sensor harness connector.

7. Start engine, if stopped, then accelerate engine a few times to 2,000 - 3,000 RPM and allow to idle.

8. Idle speed should be 750 - 850 RPM.
