Air Bag Precautions

1. To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, always disarm SRS before performing service procedures. Refer to Air Bag Arming and Disarming. Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery ground cable before performing any service. The SRS is designed to retain enough voltage to deploy the air bag for a short time even after the ground cable has been disconnected. Performing service before the minimum 10 minute lapse may cause unwanted deployment and possible injury.
2. Do not use analog Ohmmeter or circuit tester when inspecting system. Use only CONSULT diagnostic tool, or equivalent.
3. Sensors and diagnosis sensor unit must always be installed with arrow marks facing toward vehicle front.
4. Inspect sensors and brackets for cracks, deformities or rust before installation and replace as required.
5. Spiral cable must be aligned with the Neutral position since its rotation is limited.
6. When handling air bag module, always position it with pad side facing upward.
7. When handling seat belt pre-tensioner, do not point cylinder toward anyone. Should accidental deployment take place, the rubber cap will dislodge and the cylinder will emit a high temperature gas.
8. After removing any SRS components, discard old bolts and replace with new ones.
9. Conduct self-diagnosis to inspect entire SRS for proper function.
10. If front of vehicle is damaged in a collision, always inspect crash zone sensors and wiring harness, if equipped.
11. Keep air bag assembly free of oil and grease.
12. Do not expose air bag assembly to temperatures that exceed 194°F.
13. Do not expose seat belt pre-tensioner to temperatures that exceed 176°F.
14. Do not use SRS components from another vehicle. Always install new components.
15. Do not paint air bag module to correct cosmetic flaws. It must be replaced.
16. Inspect all components prior to installation. Do not install any components that appear to have been improperly handled or stored, or that show any signs of damage.
17. When performing service procedures, do not expose sensors, wiring or other SRS components to heat guns, welding or spray guns.
