DIAGNOSTIC CHART

Code 44 Diagnostic Chart:

TEST DESCRIPTION

These steps correspond to the numbered steps on the diagnostic chart:

1. Fixed dwell under 15° at idle with varying dwell at 3000 rpm usually indicates an intake air leak. Check for this problem before replacing the oxygen sensor.

2. Check to see if the ECM will respond to a rich condition caused by choking the engine. If it does, the problem is a lean engine condition and not electrical.

2A. If dwell increases to over 50° with heavy choking, the fault is an air leak since the ECM was able to respond. Disconnect the air control valve solenoid if air is being sent to the exhaust ports.

3. This step puts a rich oxygen sensor signal into ECM terminal "3." Dwell should increase (lean command).

NOTE: If code 44 is stored during cold weather (below 32°F), inlet air temperature switch circuit should be checked.
