Engine: Service and Repair
1. Remove hood and lower grille.2. Disconnect battery cable, drain coolant and relieve fuel system pressure as described under "Fuel System Pressure Relief".
3. Discharge A/C system and disconnect hoses. Immediately seal all A/C connections.
4. Disconnect temperature sensors connectors, cold-start relay harness, throttle switch and trigger unit cable and kickdown switch cable.
5. Disconnect ground wire from right intake manifold and main harness.
6. Disconnect cables at cold start injection relay. Disconnect righthand water rail feed line from heater valve.
7. Disconnect brake vacuum hoses, heater vacuum hose, throttle cable and starter wires.
8. Remove air cleaners, then disconnect and plug fuel lines.
9. Disconnect cooling system hoses, then disconnect and plug transmission oil cooler lines.
10. Disconnect and remove alternator harness.
11. Detach radiator fittings and disconnect A/C receiver-drier outlet line.
12. Remove fan cowl.
13. Remove radiator top rail together with evaporator and receiver-drier.
14. Attach engine support tool No. MS-53A, or equivalent.
15. Disconnect coolant sensor, then remove radiator and fan.
16. Disconnect exhaust pipes and remove both front heat shields.
17. Remove intermediate and rear heat shields.
18. Raise engine at rear engine mounting plate to remove collision plate at transmission and rear engine mounting stud.
19. Remove rear engine mounting plate and lower jack.
20. Disconnect driveshaft from output flange.
21. Remove selector cable and selector lever from driveshaft.
22. Disconnect speedometer cable and ground strap from side of torque converter/bellhousing.
23. Remove steering heat shields and left exhaust manifold heat shield.
24. Disconnect EGR lines from exhaust manifold and exhaust pipes.
25. Disconnect and move power steering oil cooler away from engine.
26. Disconnect power steering pump.
27. Support transmission, using a suitable jack.
28. Attach lifting chains to engine front and rear lifting eyes.
Removing engine will be easier if rear lifting chains are approximately 6 inches (154 mm) longer than front chains.
29. Remove engine from vehicle.
