Shift Interlock: Description and Operation

On models equipped with automatic transmission, a gearshift interlock system has been provided. This system prevents the gearshift lever from being moved from the Park position unless the brake pedal is applied.

In the event of system failure, the gearshift interlock may be released manually by activating the manual override release as follows:
1. On 1994 XJ12 models, remove threaded plug at top of "J" gate, Fig. 6.
2. Push ignition key into threaded hole, then move shift lever out of Park.
