Pinion Seal

RENEW

Drive the vehicle on to a ramp. Raise the ramp.

Fig.1:

Detach the four bolts (1, Fig.1) securing the propeller shaft to final drive flange.

Support the propeller shaft rear end and clean the flange and nose of the final drive unit.

Accurately measure the torque required to turn the flange through backlash, using Service Tool 18G 681 torque screwdriver (2, Fig.1) with a suitable adaptor and socket.

Note: Set the screwdriver initially to 0.6 Nm (5 lbf/in.) and increase the setting progressively until a torque figure is reached at which the flange commences to move.

The flange MUST be turned fully anti-clockwise through backlash between each check.

Mark the nut and pinion shaft so that in refitting, the nut may be returned to its original position on the shaft (3, Fig.1).

Remove the nut and washer.

Draw the flange (4, Fig.1) off the pinion shaft using an extractor.

Prise the old oil seal (5, Fig.1) out of the final drive casing.

Thoroughly clean the splines on the pinion shaft and flange. Clean the oil seal recess and coat internally with Welseal liquid sealant.

Fig.2:

Using Service Tool 18G 1428A, tap the new oil seal squarely into position with the sealing lip facing to the rear (Fig.2).

Smear the sealing lip with grease.

Apply grease lightly to the outer two thirds of the pinion shaft splines.

Lightly tap the flange into position on the pinion shaft, using a wooden mallet.

Refit the pinion nut and washer. Tighten the nut until it exactly reaches the position previously marked.

Re-check the turning torque. Torque required to turn the pinion shaft through backlash should exceed the torque recorded earlier by 0.6 to 1.1 Nm (5 to 10 lbf/in.). If, however, the torque required to turn the pinion shaft exceeds 5 Nm (45 lbf/in.), then the final drive must be overhauled. Service and Repair

Lift the propeller shaft into position, refit the bolts, fit and tighten the nuts.

Check the oil level in the final drive unit and top up if necessary.

Lower the ramp.
