ISSUE:
Some 1995-96 MY Sedan Range vehicles may experience knocking noises from the front shock absorbers.
To overcome concerns of knocking noises from the lower shock absorber mounting, the torque specification for the mounting nut has been raised to 51.6 lb. ft. (70 Nm) from VIN 777889.
ACTION:
After verifying a customer complaint of knocking noises from the front shock absorbers, perform the following checks on both sides of the vehicle:
ALL VEHICLES
1. To obtain access to upper mounting nut of the shock absorber the following items must be removed or moved aside:
4.0L vehicles only:
Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS) connector; Intake Air Temperature Sensors (IATS) connector.
MAFS and associated hoses and air duct; PCV hose.
Left side fender to hood seal, inner fender cover, coolant expansion tank. 6.0L vehicles only:
Air cleaner to induction elbow hoses.
On right side, disconnect PCV hose and Idle Air Control Valve (IATS) hose from the induction elbow hose.
Left side fender to hood seal, inner fender cover, coolant expansion tank.
2. Check that the shock absorber upper cupped washer (Illustration 1) is fully seated against the inner fender panel in the engine compartment.
3. Remove the upper mounting nut (illustration 1) and remove the upper mounting washer and insulator bushing.
4. Inspect the cupped washer. If the washer is distorted or damaged in any way, install a new cup washer (part no. CBC 5431). Reassemble the bushing and cup washer, ensuring that the cup washer is correctly seated against the body. Always install a new nut (part no. JZN 100013) and torque to 26 lb. ft. (35 Nm).
5. Repeat steps 1-4 on the opposite side of the vehicle.
6. Reinstall components removed in step 1.
VEHICLES FROM VIN 720001 THROUGH VIN 777888
1. After performing the above inspection, raise the vehicle on a lift so the front suspension hangs fully extended.
2. Remove the mounting nut (Illustration 2) from the lower mounting of the stabilizer bar link. Discard the nut. Move the link aside to allow access to the lower mounting of the shock absorber.
3. Remove and discard the existing lower mounting nut (Illustration 1) from the lower mounting bolt of each shock absorber.
4. Install a new mounting nut (part no. JZN 100013) and torque to 51.6 lb. ft. (70 Nm).
5. Reinstall the stabilizer bar link using a new nut (part no. JZN 100013) and torque to 70 lb. ft. (95 Nm).
6. Repeat steps 1-5 on the opposite side of the vehicle.
