Running Changes To Vehicle Specification
Issue:
The following changes to vehicle specification were introduced as running changes in production during January 1999.
^ Depowering of driver and passenger air bags from VIN 866048.
^ Corresponding change to VIN Coding.
^ North American Specification ONLY - deletion of flexible couplings in exhaust system, at the catalytic converter outlets from VW 866027 (normally aspirated) and VIN 866048 (supercharged.)
DEPOWERED AIR BAGS
1. Depowered air bags used on the passenger side of the vehicle are physically smaller than those used previously, and have a reduced rate of inflation. On the driver side of the vehicle, depowered air bags are the same size as before, but have a reduced rate of inflation.
Note:
Depowered air bags must not be installed on earlier vehicles, or vice versa. Such a change would compromise vehicle certification. If replacement air bags are necessary, identify the correct part number, according to the VIN, from the parts fiche. Identical replacements must always be made.
2. The Air Bag specification is identified in the VIN code, by the 4th character:
EXAMPLE SAJD..........
D USA ONLY Twin depowered air bags.
F Canada ONLY Twin depowered air bags.
P Mexico ONLY Twin depowered air bags.
J USA ONLY Depowered passenger air bag and standard driver air bag.
B Canada ONLY Depowered passenger air bag and standard driver air bag.
R Mexico ONLY Depowered passenger air bag and standard driver air bag.
Parts Information:
Identify the correct part number(s) according to the VIN, from the parts fiche. Note market specification from the VIN plate.
"Standard" air bags will continue to be available for vehicles that were not factory equipped with "depowered" air bags.
