Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Detach the selector rod.
Remove the selector rod locating pin.
4. Detach the stabilizer rod.
Remove the stabilizer rod locating pin.
5. Remove the center heat shield.
6. CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the flexible coupling (or its fixings) be loosened or removed from the driveshaft
Detach the transmission flexible joint.
Mark the position of the driveshaft in relation to the transmission flange.
Mark the position of each nut and bolt in relation to the transmission flexible joint.
7. NOTE: Support the front section of the driveshaft.
Shorten the length of the driveshaft.
Loosen the driveshaft locknut and move the driveshaft front section towards the center bearing.
8. Disconnect the right-hand bank catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
9. Detach the electrical wiring harness from the transmission.
10. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
11. Disconnect the left-hand bank catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
12. Disconnect the reverse light switch electrical connector.
13. Detach the electrical wiring harness from the transmission.
14. Detach the slave cylinder supply tube retaining clip.
15. Position the transmission jack and install holding strap around transmission.
16. Detach the support insulator.
17. Remove the transmission support.
18. Partially lower the transmission.
19. Detach the slave cylinder supply tube.
Clamp the hose to prevent loss of fluid.
Remove the slave cylinder supply tube retaining clip.
20. Detach the transmission wiring electrical harness from the transmission.
21. Remove the bellhousing bolts.
22. Remove the bellhousing bolts (continued).
23. Disconnect the starter motor ground cable.
24. Detach the starter motor wiring harness.
25. Detach the starter motor.
26. Remove the transmission.
Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts.
Installation
1. Position the transmission to the engine using the transmission jack.
2. Install the bellhousing bolts.
3. Install the bellhousing bolts (continued).
4. Install the remaining bellhousing bolts.
5. Install the starter motor.
6. Connect the starter motor electrical connectors.
7. Connect the starter motor ground cable.
8. Attach the transmission wiring harness to the transmission.
9. NOTE: Install a new 0-ring seal and clip to the supply tube.
Connect the slave cylinder supply tube.
10. Attach the slave cylinder supply tube retaining clip.
11. Loosely install the transmission support insulator.
12. Install the transmission support.
13. Tighten the transmission support insulator center bolt.
14. Remove the transmission jack.
15. Attach the electrical wiring harness to the transmission.
16. Connect the reverse switch electrical connector.
17. Connect the left-hand catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
18. Connect the speed sensor electrical connector.
19. Attach the right-hand electrical wiring harness to the transmission.
20. Connect the right-hand catalyst sensor electrical connector.
21. Install the transmission flexible joint.
22. Tighten the driveshaft locknuts.
23. Install the stabilizer rod locating pin
24. Install the selector rod locating pin.
25. Install the center heat shield.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
28. Bleed the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic system.
