Steering Column Cassette - Replacement Procedure
Issue:
On V8 XJ Series vehicles, care must be used when replacing a steering column cassette unit to prevent the wiring from being trapped as the replacement assembly is installed on the steering column. This bulletin provides a replacement procedure.
Action:
REMOVING STEERING CASSETTE UNIT
1. Disconnect the battery.
Warning:
Allow 1 minute to elapse to allow the air bag circuitry to disarm before continuing inside the vehicle.
2. Remove the lower dash panel for access.
3. Ensure that the steering is in the straight-ahead position during the next steps.
4. Remove the air bag unit, after removing the two screws located in the upper and lower faces of the air bag module.
5. Remove the steering wheel. Use care not to damage the multiplug connectors and harnesses that pass through the wheel hub.
6. Remove the upper and lower steering column cowls. Detach multiplugs as necessary to release the cowls.
7. Remove the 4 screws from the steering column switch assembly, allowing the wiper I washer and flasher switches to be partly withdrawn from their brackets.
8. Cut and remove the tie-straps which retain the wiring to the spiral cassette unit. Note the number and position of the tie-straps, so that similar NEW straps can be installed during reassembly.
9. Disconnect the multiplugs and remove the switch gear assembly. Release and discard the spiral cassette unit.
INSTALLING REPLACEMENT STEERING CASSETTE UNIT
Caution:
The replacement unit is supplied with a paper label locating the Lwo portions of the cassette unit in correct alignment. Do not remove this label until the unit has been installed on the steering column. See step 4.
1. Position the replacement cassette unit on the switch gear assembly. Align the harness and install tie-straps to secure the harness as observed during disassembly.
2. Align the switches with their mounting brackets and place the assembly on the steering column, making sure that the wiring is not trapped between the rear face of the switch assembly and the top face of the column casting.
3. Install the column switch units on their brackets.
4. Remove the paper label completely.
5. Reconnect the multiplugs to the cassette unit.
6. Reassemble all other components previously removed, in the reverse order of disassembly. Steering wheel securing bolt: Install a NEW bolt.
Torque wrench setting: 40 Nm.
7. Reconnect the battery and reset the clock.
